"Continuous effort - not strength or intelligence - is the key to unlocking our potential". Winston Churchill

Ian Tinkler, for a real fight for people of West Ward , Shetland.

Five years of Gary Robinson, "Political Leader, Shetland Island Council" and what has the West Ward of Shetland been given? Broken pledges and neglect!

An Audit Scotland report  showed that Shetland had lost 23 per cent of its funding over the past seven years.

Rural Schools under threat again!

Gary Robinson, election manifesto, 17 April 2012. "We must recognise and support the achievement of pupils and staff at Aith JHS who gained some of the best exam results in the country. I stand on my track record of supporting schools in the Shetland West ward."

18:40 Friday, 13 September 2012. Radio Shetland interviewed Gary Robinson on , the eve of the Education Committee debate on school closure proposals.

Councillor Robinson stated that "although I stood at the last election on a ticket supporting local schools, that he could not rule out support for closure of six schools." Aith Junior High was one of those six.!!!

A SELF-SUFFICIENT, AUTONOMOUS SHETLAND.

With Control of Shetland Finances and full Autonomy, we could strive for the aspirations listed below.

A self-sufficient Shetland could easily afford, these ambitious goals for the benefit of all.

The alternative is bleak, further Government funding cuts, just an austere continuation of what the Gary Robinson Political Leadership has delivered for the past five years.

“Dedicated Rape Crisis Center”

Desperately needed for all Shetland. Purposely built, “Dedicated Rape Crisis Center”, with all necessary forensic services. Linked to a major “Woman’s Aid Center”, a rural refuge with secure protection from physical and domestic abuse. Built away from Lerwick in a peaceful and tranquil setting, for example, Aith, Walls or Bixter.

Young people, Children and Teenagers

Teenagers in rural Shetland are so often lonely and bored. A very stressful time made far worse by isolation. The West Side must find ways to cater specifically for the teenage angst. Specific late busses following, “The school run”, but targeting at getting our youngster to Mareel for films and concerts. Use our Rural Halls as youth clubs again with dedicated bus runs

"With autonomy, Shetland would have its own finances available. This would all be affordably"

Move Council Services out West

Relocate Shetland Island Council services, for example, the Transport Department, to Walls. Bring new life back into our fabulous rural villages.

Massive investments on the West side.

Target for 50 new council houses on the West Side. Shetland College to open a textile center in Aith.
A specialist Rural Skills center to be established. Tanning, Skinning and Hide Curing. Black Smithery Skills, Forge and Metal working center, Stone Masonry.
All vital Rural skills at risk of being lost. A small teaching center with apprenticeships offered in these crafts.

Specialist undergraduate, S.T.E.M and Computing Center.

A vital need for a modern and dynamic Shetland. Sadly, overlooked and ignored by the Robinson Council, leaving our youngsters ill equipped for the Modern World. Our whole understanding of our environment and World depends on knowledge. Science, technology, engineering and maths skills, alongside computing and software, are sadly mostly ignored across Shetland. We should be a World leader. I propose a new purpose built facility for the West Side as a extension of the N.A.F.C.

Please note, all of these projects would only be considered after extensive consultations with the local residents. The West Side is beautiful, no development should be allowed to spoil the rural idyll.

Ian Tinkler. Candidate, West Ward , Shetland.

My Aims and Aspirations.

I am a Crofting resident of Clousta, West Shetland, with a record of serving Shetland for twenty five years as a dental surgeon. I have huge life experience ranging from dental surgery, to raising my family as a single parent on benefits and ten years serving with the Royal Navy as a commissioned Reservist. I believe I have very much to offer Shetland and her folk.

I stand as an Independent Candidate. I have proposed and fought for autonomy for Shetland for over 5 years now. As such, fully endorse the aspiratations of “Wir Shetland” and strive with that organisation for full Shetland Autonomy, however, my manifesto and my views expressed are entirely my own.

A little about me

I trained at Kings College, University of London in 1973. I worked as an independent family dental surgeon since that time.

I served as a Surgeon Lieutenant Commander with the Royal Naval Reserve. That was an honour, which I regard as great privilege. After my retirement from the Royal Naval Reserve, I, and my expanding family, moved to Shetland. That was in the summer of 1992.

I was fortunate to find a Croft, on the West Side of Shetland, which I acquired the tenancy of, in 1991. That Croft, Flawton, Clousta, has been part of my life’s work since that time. With Croft Commission blessing, the land was set fallow, to be used as a conservation area, for all natural wild flora and fauna.
